Pike Fishing

Sweden is the country of one hundred thousand lakes. In most of these lakes the northern pike is both king and queen. Well hidden, it lies in wait for its prey. When the time is right it strikes, and the pike once again shows its power in the lakes of Långtjärnen, Svarttjärnen, Abborrtjärnen, Lillsjön or any other lake.

The king and queen of Långtjärnen Lake have few natural enemies, few that can match them. They can therefore become very big and reign for many years. The northern pike can grow up to one and a half metres in length and weigh over 26 kg, and become very old.

In Jämtland the previously protected Storsjö monster ruled Storsjön Lake, but in other lakes in the region the northern pike has always ruled. The population of pike is often large and fishing it is therefore common and appreciated.

Deep forests dominate the landscape and here there are plenty of tarns, lakes, streams and rivers. That’s where the duel takes place. Using wobblers, spoons, large spinners, jigs or even trolling, and with fly-fishing gear adapted for larger fish the battle will be won.

Fly fishing has become more popular in recent years, using gear adapted for big fish. The time of day and place must also be right. Pike prefer to hunt when the sun is low in the sky. That's when the angler has the best chance of winning the match. Before or after this period the pike will more likely be victorious. Which is also the case if the rod or the trace aren’t up to scratch, a pike will easily bite through a normal line.

The pike is a cold-water fish. In the middle of a sunny day, the pike will go deep into the cold waters. In the early morning and the evening, it will come up closer to the reeds to feed. That’s when the angler can win the match. Anglers can also read the signs from bird behaviour. Where the heron, merganser, grebe and tern hunt for small fish, that’s where the pike can also be found.

Fishing for the northern pike is a year-round activity, even if there are times when it is more likely to bite, especially in spring after the reproduction period. In Sweden we have had the right to roam freely in forests and across land since time immemorial. This is a right that we call “allemansrätten”, the right of public access, which is a unique privilege and opportunity that we should all cherish. The basic rule is: You are not allowed to disturb or destroy. This means that everybody has an individual responsibility. Show consideration for nature and the landowner - use your judgement.

Our clean waters are also a godsend and something that is becoming increasingly scarce on our planet. Of course, the pike loves being here, just like the people who fish here, and can drink the waters straight out of the lake. This is something unique in the world, and something that we have to cherish. Pike fishing is also a popular family activity. No matter your age or know-how, you actually have a fair chance of winning the duel. There are plenty of pike so you will probably manage to hook one.

Another advantage is that fishing permits are considered cheap. And finding good accommodation is not difficult either. In this wilderness there is an affection for forests, nature and the outdoors that is part of the identity of the locals. Welcoming and with a positive spirit they welcome guests to their countryside. And there is enough pike for everyone.
